JavaScript strings

JavaScript strings represent text. Names, labels, messages, and search terms are all examples of information a program can handle as strings.

Where this idea appears

A greeting that includes a name or a search field that accepts a phrase depends on working with text. This is one of the everyday connections between code and what appears on a screen.

Displayed text and underlying information are connected

A string holds a sequence of text. Search terms, button labels, and messages can all be strings, but they serve different purposes. The same word appearing in a heading and in a stored record does not mean those two uses are connected automatically.

Text comparisons can also depend on details people overlook, such as extra spaces or letter case. A search experience may intentionally treat some differences as equivalent. That is a decision about how text is interpreted, beyond simply showing the characters.
