Mobile App Localization: Language, Formats, and Layout

Mobile app localization adapts an app for a language or regional context. It involves more than translated labels: dates, number formats, text length, and reading direction can affect how the same information appears.

One event can look different in two locales

Two people viewing the same trip may expect different date formats and translated button labels. A longer label can also need more room on a small screen. The underlying event stays the same while its presentation changes.

A locale is different from a physical location

A language or regional preference describes presentation choices, rather than a GPS position. Android’s localization documentation covers language resources and locale-sensitive content as parts of the app experience.

Language affects both content and conventions

Localisation includes translated words as well as dates, numbers, and other regional conventions. A label can grow longer in another language, and a familiar date format can be ambiguous somewhere else. These changes affect how the same information is understood.

Some content also comes from users or remote services rather than the app's own interface text. Translating a button does not automatically translate an article or a message. This separates the language of the interface from the language of the information it presents.
