Mobile App Push Notifications: Push vs Local Alerts

A mobile push notification carries information from a server to a device through a platform delivery service. A local notification is arranged on the device. Similar-looking alerts can therefore have different origins.

A new message and a scheduled reminder differ

A chat message comes from activity elsewhere, while a reminder about a saved reading time may already be known on the phone. The first can call for a remote notification; the second can use a local one.

An alert and the current app record are separate

A notification announces information; the app screen presents the underlying conversation or event. Apple’s User Notifications documentation also makes clear that timely delivery is attempted rather than guaranteed.

A notification and its destination should agree

A notification draws attention to an event outside the current screen. The message may concern a booking, a conversation, or a reminder. Following it needs to lead to a destination that still makes sense for the current account and app state.

The underlying event can change before the notification is opened. An appointment may be cancelled or a message removed. This connects notifications with deep links, access checks, and the difference between a previously sent message and the current information in the app.
