Mobile App Performance Basics: Startup and Responsiveness
Mobile app performance describes how efficiently an app responds and uses device resources. Opening quickly, scrolling smoothly, and reacting to a tap are different aspects of the experience rather than one single speed measurement.

A gallery may show the right pictures while scrolling pauses as more images appear. A successful data request describes one result; smooth interaction describes how the person experiences that result over time.
A measurement needs an interaction
Android’s performance guidance considers startup, rendering, transitions, and background work separately. A statement about speed needs a measured action and device context; a working preview alone does not establish performance.
Visible delay can have several causes
A screen may wait for remote information, spend time processing data, or need to display a large collection. Those delays can look similar to a person while arising in different parts of the app. A useful explanation connects the delay to the work involved.
Perceived responsiveness also depends on what happens during that work. Showing an understandable loading state and keeping available controls responsive concern the experience, while reducing the work concerns its implementation. Both help explain why performance is broader than a single speed number.
