Mobile App Updates and Versioning: After the First Release

A mobile app update distributes a newer release of an existing app. Version information identifies releases, while the installed version determines which code and packaged resources a person currently has on their device.

Two people may use different releases

A shared planner can have users who update on different days. A new screen on one phone does not mean every other phone already has it. Existing saved plans also provide context for understanding how an app changes over time.

A release and live content are different changes

Refreshing a reservation from a server is different from installing a new app release. Android distinguishes the version name people see from an internal version code used to compare releases.

A new app version meets existing information

An update changes software that people may already use with saved data and preferences. The new version needs an understandable relationship to that earlier state. A fresh installation and an update from an older release are therefore different situations.

Connected services can also serve several app versions at once. Changing the service's expectations may affect phones that have not updated yet. This connects versioning with compatibility and release planning, beyond giving the latest build a new label.
