How to Make a Drawing App: Quick Overview
Making a drawing app connects touch movements with marks that remain on a canvas. A stroke can have a path, colour, and width, while the drawing collects those strokes into a document. A selected pen describes the next mark rather than the whole document.

A person might draw three lines, change pen colour, and undo the last line. Earlier marks can keep their original appearance. The tool selection and the content already drawn therefore represent different app states.
Editable strokes and an exported picture differ
Apple’s PencilKit represents drawings as collections of strokes and also supports image output. A flat image shows the result; an editable drawing retains information about its marks. This differs from applying a filter to an existing photo.
A drawing contains actions as well as a final picture
A canvas shows the current result, while a sequence of strokes can describe how it was produced. Undo concerns an earlier action; exporting concerns the current image. Those operations depend on different information even when they share the same visible canvas.
The drawing's size and the screen's size are also different concepts. Zooming changes the view without necessarily changing the artwork's dimensions. This connects a drawing app with input, coordinate systems, history, and the separation between a document and its presentation.
