How to Make an Inventory App: Quick Overview
Making an inventory app means representing what items exist, where they are stored, and how their quantities change. An item name identifies a kind of stock; a stock record describes its amount and condition at a particular location.

A workshop might have twelve paintbrushes across two cupboards. Moving four brushes between cupboards changes their location without changing the total. Setting two aside for repair changes which brushes are available for use.
Available stock is not the same as everything on hand
Shopify’s inventory documentation distinguishes locations and quantity states such as available, reserved, and damaged. Those distinctions make this idea different from a shopping checklist or a marketplace listing.
Stock is a history of changes as well as a quantity
Receiving items, selling them, and correcting a count all affect inventory for different reasons. A current quantity summarises those changes. Recording the reason gives more meaning than simply replacing one number with another.
Location can also be part of an item's availability. Ten units across two storerooms do not mean ten units are immediately available in either room. This connects inventory to records, relationships, and the scope of a total.
