What is a class in Python?

A Python class defines a type of object that can bring data and behaviour together. Individual objects created from the class can hold their own state while sharing the same kind of operations.

One kind of thing, many individual records

A library may track several borrowed books. Each loan has its own borrower and return date, yet all loans share a common idea of being renewed or returned. Classes offer one way to represent that relationship between a kind of thing and its individual instances.

Related information and behaviour can share a model

A class describes a kind of object. Several task objects can follow the same model while holding different titles and completion states. The class describes the shared structure; each instance represents its own particular task.

An object also gives related behaviour a place alongside its information. Marking one task complete concerns that task's state, rather than every task in the collection. This relationship helps explain why classes become useful when a program represents several things with similar responsibilities.
