A supply record can connect an item name to a quantity. That relationship makes a dictionary a natural way to think about named facts and simple records.
Labels can be more useful than positions
A dictionary associates keys with values. For a contact, labels such as name and phone describe the meaning of each piece of information more directly than first item and second item. The key gives the program a way to find the corresponding value.
A missing key is also different from a key with an empty value. A profile without a nickname field and a profile whose nickname is blank represent different situations. This makes dictionaries a useful introduction to how programs describe records.
