Python lists

Python lists keep several values in an ordered collection. They are useful when the information naturally has multiple items and the sequence matters.

Where this idea appears

A set of reading tasks or a queue of names is easier to describe as a collection than as unrelated values. Lists connect that everyday idea to a program.

Order and position give a collection meaning

A list is useful when several values belong together and their order matters. A playlist has a first track and a next track; a shopping list may grow as someone remembers more items. The collection can change while remaining the same list in the program.

Position and identity are different ideas. The third item today may become the second item after something is removed. That is why a position describes where an item is now, rather than permanently identifying what the item is.
