What is Git, and why do developers use it?

Git is a distributed version control system that records a project’s history. It helps people compare changes, revisit recorded versions, and work on separate lines of development.

A history of changes to an idea

A club website might change its welcome text and event layout over several weeks. Recorded versions make those changes easier to understand than a folder of files labelled final. Git records local history; hosting services can add remote collaboration around that history.

A saved file and a recorded version are different

Git records versions of a project's files. A working file can change several times before those changes become part of a commit. The recorded history describes chosen checkpoints, rather than every keystroke made while working.

A branch gives a line of development its own sequence of commits. Combining branches brings those histories together and may require decisions where changes overlap. This makes version control a way to understand how a project evolved, alongside a way to keep earlier versions available.
