How do websites work?

A website appears when a browser retrieves resources and turns them into a page. Servers provide resources such as HTML, styles, scripts, and images; the browser combines them into the experience you see.

An address leads to a visible page

Opening a restaurant website can involve fetching its page, menu images, and visual styles. HTML describes content, CSS shapes presentation, and JavaScript can add interactions. A single page can depend on several resources.

A page is part of an exchange

A browser requests resources from a server and interprets what it receives. The initial HTML may reference styles, images, and scripts that arrive through additional requests. What appears to be one page can therefore depend on several separate pieces.

Some pages arrive with most of their content already present, while others fetch information during use. A loading indicator can represent work happening after the first document appears. This helps explain why a visible interface and a complete response from a service are different milestones.
