What is CSS?

CSS, or Cascading Style Sheets, describes how web content is presented. It controls aspects such as colour, spacing, typography, and layout, working alongside the structure provided by HTML.

Presentation changes how content feels

A reading page and a product page may both contain headings, images, and links, yet arrange them very differently. CSS gives those same kinds of content a visual hierarchy and a layout suited to their purpose.

Presentation responds to both rules and content

CSS controls presentation, including spacing, colour, typography, and layout. The same HTML can take on different appearances without changing the underlying meaning. A heading can remain a heading whether it appears in a narrow phone layout or a wide desktop layout.

Several rules may apply to the same element. The cascade determines how those rules combine and which values take effect. This explains why an element's appearance depends on more than the closest piece of CSS someone happens to notice.
