What is responsive web design?

Responsive web design is an approach that lets a website adapt to different screen sizes and viewing conditions. Content and layouts adjust so a page can remain usable on a phone, tablet, or larger display.

One page, different spaces

A group of product cards might fit side by side on a desktop and stack vertically on a phone. The information can stay the same while its arrangement changes. Readability and usable controls matter as much as fitting the screen.

A smaller screen changes more than the width

Responsive design adapts presentation to the space and conditions available. A wide row may become a vertical group, while a long heading wraps onto more lines. The purpose is to keep the same content and actions understandable across different layouts.

Text length, image proportions, and control sizes also affect whether a layout works. A design can fit within the viewport and still be awkward to read or use. Responsiveness therefore concerns the whole experience of the content, beyond the absence of a horizontal scrollbar.
