How are HTTP and APIs related?

HTTP is a protocol for exchanging requests and responses. An API is an interface software uses to access capabilities or data. Many web APIs use HTTP, but APIs also exist outside web requests.

A page can request data as well as documents

A weather page may request forecast data from a service and display the result. HTTP carries the exchange, while the API defines the available operations and expected data. A response can report success or an error.

A request has both a purpose and an outcome

HTTP provides a way for clients and servers to exchange messages. An API defines how software can ask for particular operations or information. A weather screen might request a forecast, while the response communicates whether that request succeeded and what data was returned.

An unsuccessful response and an empty successful result mean different things. A search can complete correctly without finding any matches. Understanding the difference helps connect a service's response to the message a person should see in the interface.
