A reading list refreshed from a server can succeed, return no items, or be temporarily unavailable. Good feedback helps someone understand which situation they are in.
The request and the current screen can move at different speeds
A mobile request can still be running after someone leaves a screen or changes a search term. The eventual response needs to belong to the right interaction. Receiving data alone does not establish that it is still the data the person wants to see.
Connectivity also introduces different outcomes: a request can succeed, fail, or complete with no matching records. Those cases should have understandable meanings in the interface. This connects networking to app state and clear communication about what is currently known.
