What is SQL used for?
SQL is a language for working with relational databases. It can describe which stored records are wanted and can also define or change data, depending on the statement and the database permissions.

A community library might store books and loans as related records. A question such as which books are currently borrowed concerns that stored data. SQL operates on database records; HTML presents page content, and an API can provide an interface to a service.
Related records answer richer questions
SQL works with information organised in relational database tables. A customer record and an order record describe different things, while a relationship can connect them. That structure makes it possible to ask questions involving both the order and the person it belongs to.
Selecting information and changing stored information are different operations. A report showing recent orders should not itself alter those orders. Understanding which question an operation answers helps make database behaviour clearer before the syntax becomes more detailed.
