Where this idea appears

A label and a quantity might look similar on a screen but play different roles in a program. Recognizing the distinction makes later operations easier to understand.

The kind of information affects its meaning

A number, a piece of text, and a true-or-false value support different kinds of work. A price is normally something to calculate with, while a booking reference is a label. A reference containing only digits is not automatically a quantity.

This distinction becomes visible when information enters a program from a form or a file. Something that looks like a number on screen may still arrive as text. Data types describe how the program can interpret that information, beyond how it looks to a person.
